Fished or farmed?

By law a label displayed on fish counters must also indicate the fishing method and therefore if the product has been fished or farmed. It is more and more difficult if not impossible even for  a trained eye to distinguish a fished product from a farmed one.
Colour and size in the majority of cases are not indicative characteristics anymore and often they can even be deceiving. In fact products farmed with modern aquaculture techniques have very similar characteristics to the wild ones and often farmed products arrive on the market fresher and in any requested size. Despite that the fish labelled as fished still has a much higher price compared to its farmed equivalent.

Merluccius merluccius is the only Nasello or Merluzzo that can be fished in the Mediterranean

It is very difficult to distinguish a fillet of NASELLO or MERLUZZO (Merluccius merluccius) of the Mediterranean from all the other species of NASELLO or MERLUZZO from other areas of the world. The only way to be certain is to buy it whole and with the head at the fresh products counter. This way you will also be able to better detect its freshness. This fish has refined, white, tender and lean but easily perishable meat. Since its meat is so delicate you must learn to  fillet it.

Eurofishmarket has noticed a growing curiosity and most of all the consumers’ need for a better information on the subject. From this comes the idea of “InforMare” and its creation with DadaLab.
