Oceana poposes nine new Marine Protected Areas in the Baltic Sea
The Baltic Sea is in a critical state and in serious need of protection. Today Oceana, the largest international marine conservation organisation, published a report on biodiversity and marine habitats, proposing nine areas in the Baltic Sea for inclusion in the current network of Marine Protected Areas (MPA). These areas, in Sweden, Finland and Denmark, identified during Oceana’s extensive two month research expedition in the spring of 2011, all have specifically important biodiversity that must be protected from human activities, like destructive fisheries, for the Baltic Sea to recover.

Cod has got a unique immune system
A group of Norwegian researchers showed that cod (Gadus morhua) does not present the MHC II (Major histocompatibility complex)that are common to all vertebrates, but it can defend itself against infectious agents expressing a greater number of genes of the MHC I, therefore compensating the lack of other type of defense system. Researchers argued the question of the evolution of vertebrate’s immune mechanism from these particular studies may raise interesting perspectives for the treatment of certain human diseases. This is one more reason to protect this fish species

Drugs in European rivers
Several scientific studies, carried out in India, United States and France, have shown that drug companies’ discharges can contaminate rivers and fish. As in the case of the gudgeon (Gobio gobio), a study carried out in the waters of the Dora river in France has shown problems related to the reproductive sphere: Up to 80% specimens taken from the discharge area of a pharmaceutical company showed both male and female sexual characteristics (against to a physiological Balance - 5%). In the EU there are no limits on the concentrations of drugs that can be dumped in rivers and this is the legal vacuum that would require a regulatory intervention by EU.

EU and Norwegian Pelagic industries to meet EU-Commissioner
On Tuesday 26 July the EU and Norwegian pelagic industry will have meetings with EU-Commissioner Ms Damanaki and the Norwegian fisheries minister Ms Berg-Hansen on the extremely serious mackerel situation that exists with the Faeroes and Iceland continuing to plunder the stock with impunity.
This is the 4th summer for Iceland and the 2nd summer for the Faeroes that both fishing nations allow a virtually limitless mackerel fisheries in their waters based on enormous autonomous mackerel quotas. Both countries act completely outside the current management plan for this stock and outside the scientific advice by ICES. For the Norwegian and European pelagic industry the mackerel stock is their lifeblood and the lack of effective measures by the EU and Norway aiming at bringing both countries to the negotiation table with a more constructive attitude, is therefore utmost disappointing.
Both industries have requested these urgent meetings to discuss a joint approach to redress the situation.
